“I think there should be a rule that everyone in the world should get a standing ovation at least once in their lives”
I absolutely loved this book! At moments you want to start crying, other parts you might feel bad or just want to hug someone. I think that’s exactly what this book is about. How much we can love someone, but also how much we can hurt someone.
This book is about Auggie who is born with a severe facial deformity. At a very young age Auggie had a lot of surgery done, unfortunately he is still left with a face that scares other kids. He is home-schooled by his parents. At the age of 10 his parents decide to send him to middle school. It might be good for him to blend in with other kids of his age. At school he comes face to face with the good and the bad of middle school. But for Auggie school isn’t as easy as for anyone else. He gets to deal with how it feels like not to blend in at school because he doesn’t look like the rest of the kids.
Wonder isn’t only about Auggie’s story. You get to see more than that. In his journey thru middle school in his first year he gets to meet a lot of people. Some nice, some not at all. The fun thing is that some of those kids he meets at school also get a voice in Wonder. That’s what makes this book more powerful to me. You see not only Auggie dealing with all the struggles he faces. You see how other kids react on what he goes thru or what they think about him. Wonder also lets you see a bit of their life.
The different chapters of the different kids are well written. Every person has its own personality and that reflects in the way the other kids tell their story. Summer is very optimistic. We all would love to have her as a friend. Jack Will is laid back, but a great guy. Maybe my favourite character. Not going to tell more about it because reviewing this book is a little hard without spoiling I think.
The reason why I gave this book not five stars is perhaps because of one chapter that kind of annoyed me. Justin’s chapter aka Via’s boyfriend. Via is Auggie’s sister. Justin’s chapter is written in the way he would write it. Well let’s say he’s not good at grammar.
Thank you for reading this review.
